Today’s NY Times reports an ongoing battle on Wikipedia over the publication of all 10 plates from Hermann Rorschach’s famous Rorschach test, the ambiguous inkblots that a patient is supposed to interpret.
Some of you may recognize the 10 images on this page from the famous "Rorschach" inkblot test. Actually, these are the colorless OUTLINES of the blots from the original test devised by by Hermann Rorschach, a Swiss psychiatrist, in 1921. Supporters of the test have tried to keep the actual blots secret, so that anyone undergoing the test would have a more spontaneous reaction. So, if you plan on undergoing therapy in the near future, it might be a good idea to skip this test. Please note that the Rorschach Inkblot Test is meant for fun only, and is by no means an actual indicator of your sanity, or lack of sanity.
But the more interesting problem with this comparison, it seems to me, is that it suggests that there might be a “right” and “wrong” answer on a psychological exam, as if one could get a better or worse score. What would it mean to cheat on one of these tests?
